Tell us about yourself:

My heart has been into motor sports for over 20 years. I had started out with dirt bikes, moved to 4 wheelers Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1and ultimately on to 4X4 trucks. I played around with circle track asphalt & dirt cars and arena truck races as a driver and crew for a few years. But my heart was in full size truck building, wheeling and racing. One thing that I found that is needed while wheeling (especially remote) is mechanical know-how. After I got an Associates Degree in Automotive Technology and an Associates Degree in Diesel Technology I joined the military as a mechanic and quickly became the Vehicle Recovery Team NCO. One thing that I learned from being in the military is how to accomplish difficult missions with people that I have never met while doing things that I possibly may not have ever done before. I believe all that is needed is drive, intestinal fortitude, a positive attitude and willingness to get dirty. Over the last couple of years I've gotten into welding quite a bit and have been loving it.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1How long have you been offroading?

My heart has been into motorsports for over 20 years and has played a major role in my education, career, recreation and parenting choices.

How did you get into offroading?

From a very young age off-roading was not only a way of life but the main primary source of fun in Alaska. Most Alaskans develop a high level of competence offroad with Dirtbikes/ATVs/Trucks since the majority of the state is rural and in many places is the main Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1mode of transportation.

I started out with dirt bikes, moved to 4 wheelers and ultimately on to 4X4 trucks. I raced circle track asphalt & dirt cars and arena truck for many years while building and wheeling full size trucks in Alaska. One thing that I found that was needed while wheeling (especially in remote areas) and racing is mechanical know-how. So, when I was asked what I was going to go to college for I naturally responded, “To learn how to build and fix vehicles because I seemed to keep pushing mine to the limits.” After I got ASE certified, an Associate Degree in Automotive Technology and an Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1Associate Degree in Diesel Technology I joined the Military as a mechanic and quickly became the Vehicle Recovery Team NCO. I got to recover stuck or damaged vehicles and fix broken ones in adverse conditions in the field day & night. One thing that I learned from being in the military is how to accomplish difficult missions with people that I may have never met before while doing things that I possibly may not have ever done before. I believe all that is needed is drive, intestinal fortitude, a positive attitude and willingness to get dirty.

Over the last couple of years, I've started welding quite a bit and have been loving it. I have done most of the welding and custom fabrication on my current rig (93 FZJ80 Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1on 39.5 boggers) which has led to many other custom off road fabrication jobs.

In Alaska there is such an immense area to wheel it's mind blowing, I'm always finding new exciting places to explore. To help offset my rig building costs I picked up hunting about 7 years ago with my daughter who was 2 at the time. I figured I was in the woods wheeling anyways so I might as well bring back some food for my family and my community. Over the last couple of years my daughter and I have been blessed with very successful hunting seasons and it has helped a tremendous amount financially, improved our health, honed an essential survival skill set, supported our community by giving lean organic meat to those in need and helped foster a mother-daughter bond that is unbelievably tight.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1Tell us about your vehicle:

I’ve been having a blast building offroad rigs (All sorts of makes/models & crazy combos) and racecars ever since I was a kid.

My most recent build has been a 1993 FZJ-80 Toyota Land Cruiser: Electric Lockers front and rear, 5.29 gears, custom Hydro-Assist steering, custom 8" Lift, 39.5 x 18/16.5 Super Swamper Boggers, 16.5 x 14 Marsh Racing Steel Wheels, internal double beadlocks, Moore EFX 40" curved lightbar, Safari Snorkel, brush cables rock sliders, roof rack, Stayner heat exchanger shower, WARN 12k Winch, rebuilt ARB front bumper, ARB double swing-out tire carrier, and fuel Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1storage rear bumper with integrated WARN 9.5 winch.

NAME: The Alaskan Assassin.  This rig has helped my daughter and I take down tons (literally) of big game in remote areas of Alaska. It’s been an amazing hunting rig. I’ve also enjoyed taking it through Canada and the US, offroading in some of the places people only dream about like the Rubicon Trail, Moab, Truckhaven, Johnson Valley, Hot Springs, Arkansas, Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico and many others.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1What has been your favorite offroad experience?
What excites you about offroading?  What do you think is the most challenging aspect of offroading? Which aspect of offroading do you think is the most fun? Tell us about who you go offroading with?

Those are all tough questions to answer because I have done so many different types of off-roading. I think hunting and King of the Hammers would be a tie at answering
most of those.

I love how hunting gave me an additional goal, not only make it in and out of the woods alive but also with clean edible meat to feed my family and those in need. To some that may sound like an easy task but to Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1those that have scouted/glassed/stocked/shot/field dressed/packed out/hung/cleaned/butchered big game, understand how much of an additional challenge hunting adds to the ordinary wheeling trip in the backwoods of Alaska. Once an animal is down, time is of the essence because if it is not processed quickly the meat will go sour and legal action can be taken by Fish and Game for wasting the animal. If it’s a large animal like a mature bull moose (1000+lbs), the hunter must either get their rig to the animal as quickly as possible to dress it and get it hauled out, or try to pack it out on foot with lots and lots of trips possibly walking many miles to a base camp. I shoot for the first option most of the time which is an amazing personal challenge to get from where my vehicle is to where the animal is with no trail on very rough terrain crossing swaps/rivers/drop-offs/cliffs/mountains/rocks/downed trees etc. and hope that I can find my animal again. You’d be surprised at how hard it is to find a downed animal in the tall thick brush!

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1The next challenge is to add an extra 1000lbs to my vehicle and still try to wheel it, lol that’s always fun. One thing I noticed about hunting, in the beginning, was that most of the hunting in Alaska involved wheeling which I had at that time about 15 years of experience doing and marksmanship which I had learned in the military, so I mainly had to learn how to field dress. Once I learned that piece of the puzzle I was out having a blast wheeling in the woods, facing life threating challenges and bring home the meat all with my daughter by my side! She is 9 years old and has been hunting with me for the last 7 years and wheeling with me her whole life. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1I love wheeling/going offroad/hunting/racing but I honestly love it even more when I get to share my experiences with others, whether it’s with my daughter, good friends, new people, racers, troops etc. it doesn’t matter, I just love the memories I make going through challenges with others. I love how it can bring people closer together & quicker than anything else. It forces people to work together and do things that they may not know how to do. I have so many great friendships that started with a wheeling trip, hunting trip, Baja race, short course race, emergency offroad recovery, offroad filming production etc.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1I will forever remember my experiences at King of the Hammers! A few years ago, I was brought on as a staff intern for 4 weeks to help build/breakdown Hammer Town and operate the King of the Hammers races. Additional duties at KOH involved welding, fabrication, vehicle maintenance & repair to race and support vehicles in camp and out in the field. I felt so blessed to be a part of an amazing team accomplishing such mind-blowing tasks.

One of my favorite things about offroading in Johnson Valley was that the terrain was completely different than what I was used to and that made it enjoyably challenging. Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1I was lucky to have the opportunity to drive many different types of KOH vehicles while I was there to include UTVs, Spec Race Trucks and Modified Race Trucks. Not only did I get to drive super cool offroad vehicles, but I got to do it with some of the best. I loved learning how to read and maneuver over the rocks, which were of a different compound than the rocks that I was used to in Alaska. I also enjoyed learning some tricks of the trade on how to go fast but still keep the race car together. I admit I got the KOH bug. I just love how it brings desert racing and rock crawling together. It pushes the vehicle builder to think outside the box in order to achieve the best of both worlds. I would love the opportunity to build an ULTRA 4 race truck and race at KOH someday but that’s not what Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network34it's all about, I made some friendships and memories that I will cherish forever. I cried many times as my new very close friends left, a few each day until it was just a handful of us and it became my turn to leave. It was hard to leave, I enjoyed the challenges that I got the opportunity to overcome with such knowledgeable people, I enjoyed learning how to do so many new things at a very fast pace, I enjoyed meeting hundreds and hundreds of people, I enjoyed getting to use my unique skill set with others’ unique skill set to make the impossible possible. KOH had such a large impact on my life that once I left I was only home for a few days when I booked tickets for my daughter and I to fly back down to the states and I crewed at the Battle at Primm and San Felipe 250 and visited as many of my KOH family as I could for a few weeks. After that trip I wanted to learn more, see more, experience more and interact more so I packed up my daughter & my offroad rig, started a homeschool program and drove down to the lower 48 states. We spent most of that year traveling around the US, Mexico, Canada and Europe racing, wheeling, chasing, wrenching, and fabricating. Truly life changing!

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1What was your most exciting offroad achievement?

My most exciting offroad achievement was taking 1st place at my very first W.E. ROCK Rock Crawl Competition at Donner Ski Ranch. My daughter and I showed up to Donner the night before the competition with Clay Egan’s Buggy that was set up for hand controls since he’s a quadriplegic. I had very little time Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1in his rig and had never been to a W.E. Rock Crawl event. I had seen Val Douglas at a few other races, so it was refreshing to see a familiar face that evening as she was setting up her media equipment to shoot the event’s live stream footage. Even though she had never spotted in a competition before she jumped at the opportunity to offer to spot for me since I didn’t have a spotter or crew. We were warned that we probably wouldn’t place so we should just go out and enjoy our time on the course and not stress about winning. So that’s exactly what we did! Our goal was to have fun, not get hurt and not damage the rig. I had such a blast Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1watching Val dancing around out on the course giving me amazing unorthodox directions and keeping me rubber side down! My cheeks hurt from smiling and laughing so much, LOL. Our team stayed positive, supportive and kept safety at the forefront. We had an unbelievable amount of fun together and at the end of the 2 day event we took home first place. It was so rewarding to have Val and my daughter by my side while receiving that 1st place trophy! I was extremely grateful that Clay allowed us to go out and have a try at it in his rig. I felt blessed to have had the opportunity to compete with such talented and skilled competitors on some of the gnarliest rocks around and thank the Lord for all our safety while we were out there pushing the limits.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1What does prepping for an adventure look like in your world?

Offroad Racing Adventure: My race prep begins while I am still at home. I will print everything I need, as well as store a copy of it on my phone. This allows me to gather up all necessary team information and organize various forms of communication. I also post on social media about the race and give shout outs to the sponsors. Without them, racing wouldn’t be possible.

Next, I inventory all personal gear and ensure that all paperwork is completed. I live a very active life so physically my body is ready to take on the challenge that racing brings. From a diet perspective, I try to wean myself off of caffeine and sugar. However, depending on how many late nights we have working on the racecar, I may give in to the coffee.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network34I think one of the most important parts of race prep is getting my hands on the car. The sooner I can familiarize myself with the vehicle, the more prepared I will be during the race. I like to be personally involved in the repair and maintenance of the vehicle as much as possible. Additionally, I like to go through the pit/chase vehicles to get an idea of where tools and parts are located and check to make sure we have everything we need.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1Offroad Wheeling Adventure: My wheeling prep is similar in some ways to my race prep but has a few additional steps and equipment. I gather paper maps and download aerial images of the areas I’m planning on wheeling to my LeadNav and Garmin 62s navigational devices. I create and distribute a Trip Plan with the expected date of return to family members in case of an emergency. I set up and test my Satellite phone and my InReach Satellite texter to double check my emergency communication devices. Over the years I have found out what is absolutely needed and what is not worth its weight and space. I’m not going to list everything but some of my must have equipment & supplies (above what is commonly packed) are: Pull-Pal, Hi-Lift Jack with accessories, Ready Welder with scrap Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1material, ActionTrax recovery tracks, Rugged Radios Handheld VHF radios, Stayner Heat Exchanger Shower, Bug Out Rack, PowerTank, LineX Jump Starter, cordless power tools, ARB air compressor, DC to AC inverter, chainsaw, Krazy Beaver shovel, axe, siphon, GoPro, JetBoil, Xtratufs, water purifier, hand tools, spare parts, Outdoor Edge Razor-Blaze knife and Swing-blade knife, Kamp-Rite Tent Cot, Quickloader straps, MREs, Eden Valley Freeze Dried food, life jackets for extremely deep water crossings, rifle, hand gun, snatch block, winch line extensions, tire chains, Gelid Personal Radiator, spotting scope, binoculars, range Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1finder, Slime, Outer Limit Supply first aid kit, hunting gear and home school textbooks. I do a visual check to make sure everything is still secured and functioning properly before each trip since most of my gear stays loaded year around. As a rule of thumb, I generally bring enough food, water, and extra fuel for everyone in our group. (It’s the mom in me) I cook large batches of food a few days ahead of time and freeze portion sized packages that can be easily reheated and lasts for months in my ARB 12v Fridge/Freezer. I perform a PMCS (Preventative Maintenance Checks and Services) on my truck, trailer and rig, top off fluids, double check all my lists, load up my daughter and head out.

Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1What is on your offroading bucket list?

At the top of my offroading bucket list has always been to Offroad around the entire world! Starting this summer that list will start getting checked off during the filming of The Lost Frontier Expedition. Brian Hartley, Trevor Morton, Jenna Camberlango and I will be departing Tuktoyaktuk, NT in route to explore the magnificent back roads, forgotten ghost towns, and wildlife of the North American continent. The expedition will seek out the remnants of ‘The Lost Frontier’. We will explore the remote and rare while providing exclusive access to portions of the planet few have ever seen. Traveling on small versatile Side by Sides will allow us a unique way of exploring vast portions of the continent. We will work our way, traveling offroad, through the country of Canada and then into the lower 48 states. We will explore Montana, Wyoming, Utah and Arizona before heading south of the border into the country of Mexico. We will camp in some of the most remote and hidden treasures Martha Tansey Ladies Offroad Network1America has to offer. The adventure continues as we head through Central America bound for the continent of South America. The goal is to cross every continent exploring The Lost Frontier all while filming it in breath-taking 4K by renowned cameramen and editors. It’s truly a dream come true for me!

What is a piece of advice you have been given that you instill in your offroading adventures?
